1. Marshall County Marker
Inscription. Marshall County honors John Marshall, United States Chief Justice from 1801 to 1835. The Duck River and Elk Ridge cross the county in the north and south, respectively cotton growing have way to fine horses, cattle, hogs and sheep that were shipped from Lewisburg. Limestone, existing in “almost unlimited quantities,” was used to make “excellent” lime and buildings. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who wrote “Confederate military history in letters of blood across the border states,” was born in Chapel Hill.
