1. Bedford County Marker
Inscription. Bedford, drained by the Duck River and it’s tributaries, is noted for the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration at Shelbyville and Webb School at Bell Buckle, founded in 1870 by Sawney Webb, “father of preparatory school education in the South.” The county is named for Revolutionary War officer Thomas Bedford Jr. “Rolling and exceedingly well-watered,” the county was created from Rutherford County and Indian lands. Abundant spear points indicate heavy Paleolithic (10,000 B.C.) hunting.
