The "Long Tom" Field Gun was developed to replace the French designed Canon de 155 mm GPF, a piece of artillery the United States relied on heavily during World War I. This gun was used as a heavy field weapon during World War II and the Korean War. The new split-trail carriage featured an eight-wheel integral two-axle bogie and a two- wheel limber that supported the trails for transport. Variants included the M1 and the M2, which was later known as the M59.
Every Infantry Division such as the Louisiana National Guard's 31st and later the 39th, had a battery of 155mm Towed Artillery for direct and general support.
