Inscription. At age 14, William Eugene Smith borrowed a camera from his mother to photograph planes and began his photography career. His celebrated work was seen in Newsweek, Life, Colliers, The New York Times and others. Smith sought to inspire viewers to act for social justice. His photographic essays included the war in the Pacific, the effects of industrial pollution on Japanese villagers, racism and Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
