Inscription. A major figure in the Harlem Renaissance, artist Aaron Douglas was called the "Father of African-American art." Douglas founded the art department at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Known for his two-dimensional, black and white abstract paintings, his public building murals and his publication cover designs, Douglas exemplified the "New Negro" philosophy. He urged the creation of an "art era" with "earthy, spiritual and dynamic" works that would tell the story of his people.
