Inscription. At age eight, Frank Marshall Davis discovered the blues. The music affirmed and sustained him, and helped him translate his experience. After attending Kansas State University, Davis wrote major collections of poetry including I Am the American Negro (1937) and 47th Street Poems (1948), all popular during the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s. For 30 years Davis wrote for and edited numerous publications, including Chicago's Evening Bulletin, Whip, and Star, the Atlanta World and the Associated Negro Press.
