Inscription. Dubbed the "American Sculptor," Robert Merrell Gage expressed the American experience in his work, across a range of formats and materials. Gage studied sculpture in New York and France and was apprenticed to Gutzon Borgium for six years. His first public commission, a statue of Abraham Lincoln, sits in pensive dignity on the Kansas State Capitol grounds. Gage taught at Washburn, Kansas City Art Institute, the University of Southern California and Chouinard Art Institute and served on the 1936 Olympics' sculpture commission.
