Here lived Lt Colonel Hubert de Lagarde, founder and leader of the "Eleuthera" intelligence network of the French fighting forces, arrested by the Gestapo on June 16, 1944 and died in Ellrich on January 25, 1945.

Excerpt (in translation): From February to early June 1944, Lagarde worked tirelessly, the result of which was notably sanctioned by the testimony of satisfaction sent to him at the end of May on the occasion of the destruction of almost the entire SS Hohenstauffen division (the bombing of Mailly-le-Camp) by the Allies....At the beginning of June, Lagarde was advised that the danger to him was increasing. Requested again to take refuge in London, he refused a second time for the same reason - he did not want to leave Paris, having already stood up to the enemy during a dark and relentless fight of more than a year. He was finally arrested in Paris on June 27, 1944 and
