Mars is a small rocky planet, colored red by abundant iron oxide on its dusty surface. It is a dry, frozen, desert world with a very thin carbon dioxide atmosphere and polar ice caps made of water and dry ice. Mars has the tallest mountain and the deepest canyon of all the planets. The two small moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, may be captured asteroids. Mars shows evidence that it was warmer and wetter in the distant past, with rivers and lakes on its surface.
It takes 12.7 minutes for light to travel from the Sun to Mars.
The Curiosity rover was launched on November 26, 2011. It traveled for 8.4 months to reach Mars.
