Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, is a gas giant more than 300 times more massive than Earth. Composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, it has no solid surface. Its striped appearance is due to bands of ammonia ice clouds swept by winds that move at hundreds of miles per hour. Galileo's discovery of Jupiter's four largest moons, using one of the first astronomical telescopes, provided decisive evidence for the Copernican model of the solar system.

It takes 43 minutes for live to travel from the Sun to Jupiter.

The Voyager 2 spacecraft was launched on August 20, 1977. It traveled for 1.9 years to reach Jupiter.
