Uranus is an ice giant, with an atmosphere of of mostly of mostly hydrogen and helium gas on top of a thick mantle of water, ammonia, and methane ices surrounding a rocky core. Its distinctive pale blue color is due to traces of methane in its upper atmosphere. Uranus was discovered in 1781 by the astronomer William Herschel, making it the first planet discovered with a telescope. Unique among the planets, Uranus rotates on its side with its poles lying nearly in the plane of the solar system.

It takes 2 hours and 39 minutes for light to travel from the Sun to Uranus.

The Voyager 2 spacecraft was launched on August 20, 1977. It traveled for 8.4 years to reach Uranus.
