Union Church
The Episcopal Union Church was the first religious edifice built in Montgomery. John Henry Hopkins, the first Episcopal Bishop of Vermont, consecrated the new church in 1835. Originally designed as a traditional meeting house, extensive renovations in the 1870s added Gothic Revival features as well as the clock, bell, and stained-glass windows. Reconsecrated in 1897 as St. Bartholomew’s, the church remained active until 1927, when it was used solely for annual “Old Home Sundays.” Unused and in disrepair for most of the 1960s and early 1970s, the church was deconsecrated in 1974. That same year, the Episcopal Diocese sold the building to the newly formed Montgomery Historical Society, saving it from demolition. It was renamed Pratt Hall in 1977.
