Inscription.

The architecture of this structure is often referred to as "Gingerbread Victorian." It features a series of sharply peaked escalloped gables: four on the east side, three on the south side and one at the north. The narrow, high windows have diamond-shaped figures worked into the glass. Mahlon C. Mercur, a well-known local businessman, built the 21-room, multi-gabled residence between 1854 and 1869. In 1892 Charles P. Welles and his wife acquired the property. Mr. Welles operated a crockery and fancy goods store in Towanda from 1877 to 1897. He was a member of Towanda Borough Council and a Towanda Burgess. He was also a prominent Mason and a member of the Vestry of Christ Episcopal Church.
