Inscription. The Elk River flows across the center of this county named for Revolutionary "War Major General Benjamin Lincoln. This territory obtained by an 1806 treaty with Cherokee negotiated by Secretary of War Henry Dearborn, included land south the Duck River to Tennessee’s southern border. The Cherokee were given $10,000, a gristmill and a cotton gin: Chief Black Fox received an annuity of $100 for life.” Creek Indians were paid $14,000 for their lands farther west
