1. Smith County Marker
Inscription. Well watered by the Caney Fork and Cumberland rivers, the county venerates Revolutionary War Colonel Daniel Smith, who surveyed Tennessee and made the first map of the state. Carthage was first settled, probably in 1787 by Colonel William Walton who built the important Walton Road that ran from Nashville through Carthage to Kingston. Tobacco is an important crop in this agricultural region that is home to United States Vice President, Albert Gore Jr.
