Inscription. The smallest county is named for Tennessee Governor William Trousdale, who served with Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 and was U.S. Minister to Brazil. During the Civil War the Federal garrison surrendered to Confederate General John Hunt Morgan in Hartsville after one hour’s fight on December 7, 1862. The Cumberland River drains the hilly surfaces and forms most of the southern boundary. Construction of TVA’s nuclear power plant was halted at Hartsville in 1984. Tobacco farming still flourishes in rich valleys.
