Inscription. Macon County has many mineral springs, most famous of which is Red Boiling Springs, named for its red sediment. Noted for medicinal qualities of their waters, these springs were “visited during the hot season by invalids and pleasure seekers. “. Situated in the Highland Rim, the county has grown tobacco since the early days when this crop was hauled to the Cumberland River and then floated to New Orleans. Macon is named for North Carolina Congressman and Senator Nathaniel Macon.
