1. Putnam County Marker
Inscription. Named for Israel Putnam, French and Indian And Revolutionary War veteran, Putnam County is located in the Eastern Highland Rin and the Cumberland Plateau. The county was created in 1842, but when an injunction prevented officers from performing their duties, local government came to a standstill. Largely through the efforts of Major Cooke, for whom Cookeville was named, Putnam was re-established. Hunting grounds for Cherokee, Creek, and Chickasaw evolved into mining, agriculture, manufacturing and education sites.
