1. Grundy County Marker
Inscription. President Van Buren's attorney general Tennessean Felix Grundy died four months before this county was formed. The stony Cumberland Pleau refuge holds Savage Gulf, Beersheba Springs, Monteagle Assembly retreat, Swiss-founded Gruelti, and Tracy City where coal was discovered in the 1840s by boys digging out a groundhog. Coal become a principal industry controlled by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railway Company. A violent depute with miners over the use of convict labor occurred in 1892. Highlander Fork School began here in 1932.
