Inscription.
In 1910, Buella and A. A. McCue donated land for a school in the Baertown community. In 1911, a wood frame school was built and named "Universal.” It was the first school in the community to educate black children. In the early 1950s, the frame building was torn down and a new school was constructed facing McComb Street. It continued as a school until the early 1960s, when a third school was built on Universal Street. This building, which is the original 1950s-era school, was renamed the Alpha Center and used as a library and community center.
