Karst, a limestone topography pitted by caves, sinkholes, and underground drainage, covers most of the county. It engenders flooding, Tennessee’s greatest natural hazard. A county once rich in coal, the above ground drainage is by the Candy Fork and Calfkiller rivers. Lester Flatt, who with his partner Earl Scruggs redefined the structure of modern bluegrass music, was a native.
