1. Overton County Marker
Inscription. Standing Stone State Park and Forest occupies 11,000 acres of Overton County, named after State Supreme Court Justice John Overton. He was an intimate friend of Andrew Jackson and one of three founders of Memphis. “Standing Stone” refers to a dislocated eight foot tall Indian boundary rock. The oldest town in the county is Hilham, founded in 1805 by educator Moses Fisk. In 1806, he established Fisk Female Academy, the first institution of its kind in the South.
