Inscription. One of the last counties formed, Pickett was named for Howell L. Pickett, state representative from Wilson County in 1879. This remote Highland Rim and Cumberland Plateau area has uncommon rock formations and natural bridges. Pickett State Park land donated by Stearns Coal and Lumber Company in 1933, offers unspoiled mountain trails where “rock walls tower above brawling streams and giant magnolias shade the lake.” Native Cordell Hull won the 1945 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in founding the United Nations.
