1. Scott County Marker
Inscription. Scott County, named for General Winfield Scott, is rugged gorges, forested Cumberland Plateau grandeur, and ground of 300 million year old Paleozoic sandstone, shame, conglomerate, siltstone, and coal. To earn a meager economic existence, 20th century miners and loggers stripped the land. The western third of the county is now part of Big South Fork National Recreation Area, an economic and conservation initiative. Rock overhangs, that sheltered humans here for centuries, naturally preserve archaeological treasures.
