1. Morgan County Marker
Inscription. Morgan County, on the Cumberland Plateau, was a place of extreme isolation before the railroad replaced subsistence farming with lumbering and mining in the 1880s. German, Swiss, Polish, and Norwegian peoples have successfully settled in the county named for Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan. Rugby was the utopian English community founded in 1880 by writer Thomas Hughes. After years of environmental exploitation, tourism now leads an economy that treasures the area’s natural beauty.
