1. Marion County Marker
Inscription. “The Swamp Fox,” Revolutionary General Francis Marion, is honored by this county, which falls between the Cumberland Plateau and Walden’s Ridge at the southern end of the Sequatchie River Valley. Cherokee Betsy Peck donated the land for the county seat at Jasper, and Sam Houston taught at his namesake academy there. The school was built in 1824 by slave and expert carpenter Alfred White, who bought freedom for his family and himself with its construction.
