1. Hamilton County Marker
Inscription. Created from Cherokee Indian lands and Rhea County, Hamilton is named for Alexander Hamilton, first U.S. Treasurer. Chattanooga began as a river landing and became a model tourism center as the “Environmental City” in the 1980s-90s. More than 10 million annually visit Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, the Chattanooga Choo-Choi, the Tennessee Aquarium and other attractions. Famous Civil War battlefields at Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and Lookout Mountain are popular sites.
