Inscription. Rhea County has an especially curvaceous boundary created by man-made Watts Bar Lake and the Tennessee River. The area honors Revolutionary War Battle of King’s Mountain veteran John Rhea, who was also a higher education advocate. The Cherokee, who relinquished this land in 1805, venerated Rhea Springs, a “Home of the a great Spirit,” for its medicinal qualities. Dayton is famous for the 1925 Scope Trial argued by William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Barrow over the right to teach evolutionary theory.
