1. Roane County Marker
Inscription. Expansive Watts Bar, one of TVA’s six mainstream lakes , extends across Roane, named for Judge Archibald Roane, Tennessee’s second governor. By 1800, Kingston was an important destination at the eastern end of the Walton Road. In 1807, it was the state’s capital for a day to circumvent the spirit, but not the letter, of a treaty with the Cherokee. Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives for 17 years, longer than anyone before his time, was born in Roane.
