Inscription. On the Wilderness Road blazed by Daniel Boone is the famous Cumberland Gap, a gateway where the great western road passed through the mountains. This crucial passageway, also an earthquake epicenter enabled immigration from Virginia into Middle Tennessee and Kentucky. William C.C. Claiborne was one of the first Superior Court Judges and Tennessee congressional representatives. The Powell and Clinch rivers drain the array of hills, mountains, and valleys where coal, iron, and manganese are found.
