Inscription. Union County is a testament to the strong support for the Union in East Tennessee prior to the Civil War. It’s picturesque expanse was formed from portions of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger, and Knox counties. Attorney Horace Maynard, for whom the county seat was re-named (previously Liberty), defended Unionists’ right to form their own county in a lawsuit settled in 1853. Country music stars Roy Acuff, Chet Akins, and Carl Smith were born here.
