Inscription. In spring, dogwood blossoms grace a countryside laden with marble. Within Knox County, named for Secretary of War Henry Knox, the Holston and a French Broad rivers converge, forming the Tennessee River. This fortunate geography shaped an industrial and transportation heritage for Knoxville, the first state capital. In 1786, James White built White’s Fort, the county’s first pioneer settlement. Territorial governor William Blount built his home in 1792. In 1794, Blount College was established, later becoming the University of Tennessee.
