A dozen Cherokee chiefs ceded the Hiwassee District to the United States by treaty in 1819. McMinn County was named for Joseph McMinn governor at that time. The treaty also provided that reservations of 640 acres were offered to all Cherokees choosing to become US citizens. McMinn is blessed with red hematite ore containing gold, silver, lead as well as swift flowing streams that cascade to the Hiwassee River.
