1. Polk County Marker
Inscription. Most of this county lies in the Chilhowee and Unaka Mountains. It is endowed with copper and the Conasauga, Hiwassee, and Ocoee rivers. The county and its seat are named for President James K. Polk and Thomas Hart Benton. At Columbus, resident Cherokee traded with pioneers. Nancy award, the last Cherokee Beloved Woman, whose position of honor permitted her to participate in tribal decisions, operated an inn, where she also cared for orphans at her home outside Benton. She is buried nearby.
