1. Monroe County Marker
Inscription. Monroe County is named for President James Monroe. The Cherokee town of Tanasi is the name source for the Tennessee River and the state. Sequoyah, inventor of thenCherokee syllabary, was born in this region that also included Cherokee towns of Chota and Tellico. The first English settlement west of the Alleghenies was at Fort Loudon (1756-1760). Agriculture, forestry, mining, manufacturing, and education are all essential elements of the contemporary economy. The Lost Sea, an underground lake, is a National Landmark.
