1. Blount County Marker
Inscription. Blount County honors William Blount, governor of the Southwest Territory. Young Sam Houston was among the early settlers and begging a life-long association, “one day crossed the river into Indian country and remained with the Cherokee’s for a year.” Tranquil Cades Cove, a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park named for Chief Abrams’s wife Kate, is within this territory rich in iron and marble. Lured by abundant hydroelectricity, Aluminum Company of America built Alcoa’s processing plant in 1913.
