1. Jefferson County Marker

Inscription. The French Broad River feeds far reaching Douglas Lake, dominant feature of the county named for scholar, statesman, and President Thomas Jefferson. Dandridge, located on this lake covering much of southern half of the county, is named for Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, wife of President Washington. In 1815 at Lost Creek Meeting House, eight people formed the Tennessee Society for Promoting the Manumission of Slaves, the first abolitionist organization in the country.
