1. Hancock County Marker
Inscription. Hancock County is bordered on the north by Virginia and traversed diagonally by the Clinch and a Powell rivers and Copper Ridge. Named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock, this rough and mountainous terrain was first settled about 1795, but remained sparsely populated for years. It was one of Tennessee’s first counties to establish public schools. Melungeons, once thought to have mysterious origins, now have substantiated claims of Mediterranean heritage.
