1. Washington County Marker
Inscription. Now a mere fraction of its original size, Washington County was Tennessee’s first county and the first political division in the United States named for George Washington. Jonesborough, a planned town from its inception, claims to be the state’s oldest town. Pioneers broke from North Carolina and established the “Lost State” of Franklin. Higher education came to Tennessee with Samuel Doak, who founded Martin Academy here in 1780. The 1797 Chester Inn houses the National Storytelling Center.
