1. Unicoi County Marker
Inscription. Unicoi, a variation of the Cherokee word meaning “white, hazy, fog-draped,” is similar in pronunciation to the Unalaska Mountains that run through this county bordering North Carolina. Iron ore, manganese, and timber have supported the economy, aided by the Nolichucky River. An area called Greasy Cove was named for the grease long hunters left after skinning wild game. The county seat was first named Vanderbilt in the hopes that George W. Vanderbilt would construct Biltmore in Unicoi’s mountain splendor.
