1. Carter County Marker
Inscription. Carter was the first county created by the first Tennessee General Assembly. It venerates Landon Carter, speaker of the Senate for the “Lost State of Franklin.” Elizabethton, where the self-governing Watauga Association formed, honors his wife. William Bean began settlement of Tennessee in 1769 along Boone’s Creek. The mineral-rich earth has the largest concentration of the oldest rocks in Tennessee. At 6,285 feet, Roane High Knob is one of the highest crests in the eastern United States.
