Inscription. Johnson County is entirely within the Cherokee National Park. In this eastern most area of the state, the Appalachian Trail enters Tennessee and, following the geologic design of East Tennessee, proceeds with the a southwestern sweep of Stone and Iron Mountains. The county is namesake was Thomas Johnson, a Doe River settler. A Johnson County man named Honeycutt may have proceeded William Bean as the state’s first settler. Poetically christened “The Land of the Sky,” this place has legendary loveliness.
