1. Downtown Fort Stockton Marker
Inscription. Fort Stockton was incorporated as a city after a 56 to 51 vote in favor on December 27, 1910. Prior to that time, the original settlement was named St. Gall. The citizens changed the name to Fort Stockton in 1881. Fort Stockton's first Mayor was James Rooney, elected January 17, 1911. The Rooney Hotel was constructed in 1910, later purchased by the Hirst Family and is now known as the Springhirst Hotel.
