Inscription. A once aspiring actor, John Cameron Swayze abandoned his dreams of Broadway when the stock market crashed in October, 1929. He moved to Kansas City, took a job with The Kansas City Journal-Post as a reporter and broadcasted news bulletins on KMBC radio. Years later, NBC made Swayze the first TV network news anchor on the "Camel News Caravan." Most people remember Swayze as the pitchman for Timex Watches who made famous the expression "Takes a licking and Keeps on Ticking."
