Inscription. Born in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania on September 9, 1887, Alfred Mossman Landon moved to Kansas at age 17. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1908 and by 1929 was an oil industry millionaire. Deeply interested in politics, Landon served as the Republican Governor of Kansas from 1933 until 1937. He proved to be a fiscal conservative who reduced taxes and balanced the budget. Always outspoken, in 1936 he made an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Presidency against Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
