1. Sutler's Store Marker
Inscription. Owned and operated by a civilian merchant, the sutler's store was the only two-story building at Fort Lancaster. The sutler sold liquor, tobacco, and supplies to travelers as well as soldiers. This building also served as a stage relay station for the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Company.

Tobacco, music, cards, and for some a little drink were the ways a soldier passed his off-duty time when posted to this remote location.
