Excerpt from the National Register of Historic Places registration form for the cemetery:
… Dedicated on September 25, 1915, the Monument … is fifteen feet high, weighs twenty-four tons, and is constructed of Barre granite. The base is rock-faced. On the smooth secondary base are two six-foot statues, one of a Civil War soldier and the other of a Spanish American War soldier, standing at parade rest. The rectangular central section of the monument is surmounted with a six-foot spread eagle made of sheet bronze and standing on a pyramid of cannon balls. The central block was placed on blocks of ice under the base; as the ice melted, the monument settled into place without chipping. Using lumps of sugar instead of ice had actually been considered. The $3,000 monument was financed through a fund-raising drive begun in 1911 by veterans organizations, their auxiliaries, and other citizens.
