The Wagner House design was commissioned by Robert Wagner and his wife, Thekla Klug Wagner, in 1900. Rock Island's most prominent architect, George P. Stauduhar received the commission.…

When the Wagners moved into their new house on 23rd Street in 1904, a decade after their marriage, Robert was well established in a leadership position in the family brewery business. Within the next decade he would assume a similar position in Rock Island financial institutions. The Wagners occupied 904 23rd Avenue together until Robert's death in 1937 (33 years). Thekla continued in residence until her death nineteen years later in 1956.
