Regarding The Democrat Newspaper Building. Excerpt from the Davenport Architectural/Historical Survey entry on the building, which led to it being placed on the National Register in 1983:
The Davenport Democrat began as the Democratic Banner in 1848. It was edited along Democratic party views, its success varying with the success of the party. D.N. and J.J. Richardson were the Democrat's successful publishers beginning in the 1860's. The Democrat purchased its competitor, the Gazette, in 1887 and the Evening Leader in 1902. In c. 1915 the Lee Newspaper Syndicate took over the merged Democrat and Leader, ending its reign as a local independent news voice.
