Ferry Ploeger
Amsterdam, 21 december 1915- Bloemendaal, 16 Juli 1944
House painter Ferdinand Ploeger and his wife Hanna Ploeger-Gerritze had already helped communist and Jewish refugees from Germany before the war. During the war, Ploeger distributed the illegal magazine De Waarheid("The Truth"), wrote anti-German slogans on walls and collected money and voucher cards for the Solidarity Fund, which supported people in hiding and the families of those arrested. His wife and their daughter Jopie went on a scavenger hunt for identity cards in swimming pool changing rooms. Together with Freek Ox, he was to liquidate SS officer Wouter Mollis of the Sicherheitspolizei on 15 July 1944 by order of the Resistance Council. This failed, they were arrested and in an attempt to escape Ox was murdered and Ploeger was arrested again, seriously injured. At the site of the firefight, now number 79 of the Gerrit van der Veenstraat, a memorial plaque has been placed. Ferry Ploeger was posthumously awarded the Resistance Cross. His wife Hanna, who continued her own resistance work and survived the war, also received this.
